Overview

Northwood Technical College is seeking applications from qualified candidates for a part-time instructor to teach a Farm Commodities class in the fall semester.  This course introduces students to commodity markets and risk management strategies related to farm production and grain marketing, including topics such as futures markets and securities, basis and spread analysis, carry costs, put and call options, common marketing mistakes in agriculture, pre- and post-harvest grain marketing plans, and technical and fundamental market analysis. 


This position involves teaching and curriculum delivery, supporting students through effective communication and feedback, engaging in relevant professional development, and contributing to course updates as needed. 
The course is offered online live, meaning live face-to-face virtual classroom experience where students join class through the internet from anywhere. It is scheduled from 2:30 - 3:50 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays with an additional hour of online instruction weekly. The class runs starting August 25, ending Dec 11th, 2025. 


Ideal candidates will have two or more years (4000-hrs) of practical experience with futures and options trading, commodity risk management, and grain marketing strategies, along with post-secondary teaching or training experience with at minimum a bachelor’s degree. 


This is a part-time faculty position, ideal for professionals looking to share their real-world expertise with students pursuing careers in agriculture and agribusiness.

  • Create performance-based assessment plans, employ a variety of formative and summative assessment strategies, communicate assessment results in a timely fashion to promote student learning, and use assessment results to improve instruction.
  • Demonstrate professional behaviors to support teaching and learning and utilize varied strategies for managing the learning environment.
  • Identify exit learning outcomes and external standards, develop competencies that describe intended learning outcomes, create performance-based plans and assessment tasks for each course, develop learning objectives and plans, prepare syllabi, and utilize a quality review process to validate curriculum.
  • Utilize a variety of data analysis tools, analyze data from teaching and learning experiences, and use data to inform decision making about the teaching and learning process.
  • Assess effectiveness in embracing diversity, examine the impact of college, community, and student demographics on teaching and learning, and create an inclusive, effective learning environment that addresses barriers and provides reasonable accommodations.
  • May be assigned to mentor high school teachers who offer Northwood Tech-articulated courses.
  • Model the Employability Essentials expected of Northwood Tech students, which are to communicate clearly, think critically, and demonstrate professionalism, and practice inclusivity.
  • Designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) to receive and report criminal incidents to the Northwood Tech Safety Office by virtue of this role’s responsibilities at the College (only applies to instructor positions with club advising duties).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Degree & Experience Required: 
• Bachelor’s degree in the field or closely related field and 2 years (4,000 hours) of occupational experience, of which at least 1 year (2,000 hours) shall be within 5 years prior to the date of appointment. 
OR 
• 1- or 2-year technical diploma in the field or closely related field and 5 years (10,000 hours) of occupational experience, of which at least 1 year (2,000 hours) shall be within 5 years prior to the date of appointment. 
OR 
• Training (including registered apprenticeship) and 5 years (10,000 hours) of occupational experience, of which at least 1 year (2,000 hours) shall be within 5 years prior to the date of appointment. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
• Ability to obtain driver’s license and insurance coverage in accordance with College policy 

 

Salary

FY25 Salary - Adjunct Faculty:
Non-FQAS Completion - $44 / hour

FQAS Completion - $49 / hour
